Breast Augmentation: Understanding the Many Options

If you’re like many women, breast augmentation is something you’ve wanted to do to enhance your figure for several years. When you decide the time is right to get a fuller, more symmetrical bustline — one that enhances your other physical features proportionally — there’s a lot to consider.

Richard Peck, MD, in West Orange, New Jersey, is a skilled plastic surgeon who offers numerous types of implants and breast enhancements. Take a few minutes to understand the many options before you take the first step on your breast augmentation journey.

Silicone or saline?

One of the first decisions you need to consider is the material of your new breast implants. Which is better for you: silicone or saline? There are advantages and disadvantages to both, so it’s a personal decision. Dr. Peck can help you decide which type is right for you based on your health and aesthetic goals, but in the meantime, consider the following:

Saline breast implants

Saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution. Such implants are considered safe because if they leak or rupture while it’s inside you, the saline solution gets naturally absorbed and eliminated by your body. Saline implants are uniform in shape, firmness, and feel, and the FDA approves them for breast augmentation in women who are 18 years old and older.

Saline implants collapse when punctured or as the contents leak out. Structured saline implants contain an inner support structure that attempts to make the implants feel more like natural breast tissue.

Silicone breast implants

Silicone implants are filled with silicone gel. Many people believe silicone feels more natural than saline.

If a silicone implant leaks or ruptures, you run the risk of the gel escaping into your breast implant pocket. However, a silicone breast implant doesn’t collapse, and in many cases, the gel leaks into the implant shell, not your body.

You may need more frequent evaluations — including ultrasounds or MRIs — to make sure your silicone implants are functioning properly. Silicone implants are FDA-approved for breast augmentation in women who are 22 and older.

Form-stable, or gummy bear, breast implants

Form-stable implants, commonly called gummy bear implants, are a type of silicone breast implant that maintains its shape even if the shell breaks. The gel inside gummy bear breast implants is also thicker than it is in regular silicone implants.

Gummy bear implants are larger at the bottom and tapered at the top, like natural breasts. If the implant rotates, though, you’ll need another surgery to put it back into its correct place.

So many shapes and sizes

Beyond deciding between silicone or saline breast implants, you also need to consider the shape and size of your new breasts. Some of the options include:

Dr. Peck can help you decide about size and shape, as well as which implants will look best with your body type. What looks good on one woman may look disproportionate on you. Ideally, you should try out different options using sizers and view before-and-after images of women with a similar body frame to yours.

Other types of breast augmentation

You might also consider a breast lift. This procedure can reshape and reposition your breasts to make your breasts appear more youthful.
